June Matchday

The June Matchday in the Mini BLNG Badminton League took place last week. A record number of sixteen players took part in this month’s match, with two new players joining for the first time and a number of players returned after taking some time off. Ady and Pg Jaludin joined the now-expanding group of monthly badminton group. With the now large number of teams playing, spread over a wide range of skills, it was decided that to continue last month’s format where the players were divided into two groups; one group A and the other group B. Each player in each group is paired with another from the other group.

The combinations for this month matchday were:
Team A Rosli T & Fauzy

Team B Jupry & Pg Jaludin

Team C Hj Mazrul & Saiful

Team D Kamal & Hj Halfiq

Team E Othman & Fakhrul

Team F Zulhaimin & Teo

Team G Suhaina & Matassim

Team H Yahya & Ady

Again, last month’s format was followed as there were a big number of pairings available and time and fitness might impair performances of all teams. The games were shortened, where each game would be played in one set to 31-points. Winners would get one point and losers would get none.

This month’s Champions were easily determined as Team A easily beat all the others teams, though they did not play Team E, as Othman turned up almost an hour late. This month, it was the second-placed position that became hotly contested. Team F and Team G scored the same number of points, but Team F had earlier beaten Team G and Team F had scored a highly point difference, compared to Team G, therefore Team F was declared the second-placed winner. Team E did not complete all their games and were not awarded ‘walk-over’ points over the other teams that had left early.

The result of May Matchday was:

First: Team A (Rosli T & Fauzy) – 6 points

Second: Team F (Zulhaimin & Teo)– 5 points

Third: Team G (Suhaina & Matassim) – 5 points

Forth: Team D (Kamal & Hj Halfiq) – 3 points

Joint Fifth: Team B (Jupry & Pg Jaludin) and Team C (Hj Mazrul & Saiful) – 2 points

Seventh: Team H (Yahya & Ady) – 0 points

The League standing after June Matchday is:

Hj Mazrul - 6 games - 14 points

Fauzy - 3 game - 7 points

Suhaina - 6 games - 6 points

Teo - 5 games - 6 points

Matassim - 6 games - 5 points

Rosli - 2 games - 5 points

Rosli T - 2 game - 5 points

Hj Halfiq - 6 games - 4 points

Yahya - 5 games - 4 points

Zulhaimin - 5 games - 4 points

Othman - 6 games - 3 points

Zulhairul - 3 games - 3 points

Jupry - 2 games - 3 points

Oliver - 1 game - 3 points

(Kamal, Saiful, Fakhrul, Ady, Pg Jaludin and Sau Jin all have not scored any points)

Next month's tournament is expected to be on the second Tuesday of the month, i.e. 14 July, unless otherwise notified. Watch out this space for more details.

May Matchday

The latest Matchday in the Mini BLNG Badminton League took place last week. Fourteen players tok part in this monthly match, with three new players joining for the first time. Oliver, Fakhrul and Kamal joined the now-expanding group of monthly badminton group and are expected in the coming months. Similar to last month and of the big participation and the wide range of skills that the players have, it was decided that the players were divided into two groups; one group A and the other group B. Each player in each group with with another from the other group.

The combinations for this month matchday were:
Team 1 Kamal & Sau Jin
Team 2 Hj Mazrul &Metassim
Team 3 Jupry & Oliver
Team 4 Othman & Yahya
Team 5 Hj Halfiq & Teo
Team 6 Suhaina & Fauzy
Team 7 Fakhrul & Khairul

Due to the big number of pairings available, and in view of fitness and time (as the game started late following a safety incident at work), the organisers decided to shorten each game, where each game would be played in one set to 31-points. Winners would get one point and losers would get none.

The top two positions were hotly contested by Team 2 and Team 3. At the end of the matchday, both teams score the same number of wins (five wins each). In the end, the final position was determined by the head-to-head record between Team 2 and Team 3. Team 3 had earlier conflicted the only defeat on Team 2, therefore Team 3 was declared the Monthly Champions. For the first time ever, Hj Mazrul lost a game and lost possession of the monthly champion's trophy. And again, beginner's luck continued as Oliver became the latest first-timer to win the monthly champion's trophy. Another first, one of the teams failed to score any points at all.

The result of May Matchday was:
First: Jupry & Oliver – 5 points (won due to better head-to-head record)
Second: Hj Mazrul & Matassim – 5 points
Third: Suhaina & Fauzy – 4 points
Joint Forth: Kamal & Sau Jin, Othman & Yahya and Fakhrul & Khairul – 2 points
Seventh: Hj Halfiq & Teo – 0 point

The League standing after May Matchday is:
Hj Mazrul - 5 games - 14 points
Rosli - 2 games - 5 points
Suhaina - 5 games - 5 points
Teo - 4 games - 4 points
Yahya - 4 games - 4 points
Fauzy - 2 game - 4 points
Matassim - 5 games - 4 points
Hj Halfiq - 5 games - 4 points
Oliver - 1 game - 3 points
Jupry - 2 games - 3 points
Zulhairul - 3 games - 3 points
Othman - 5 games - 3 points
Rosli T - 1 game - 2 points
Khairul - 4 games - 2 points

Next month's tournament is expected to be on the second Tuesday of the month, i.e. 14 June, unless otherwise notified. Watch out this space for more details.

April Matchday

The fourth Matchday in the Mini BLNG Badminton League took place last week. This matchday saw the biggest participation yet, with 14 players turning up. Ten players returned and four new players joined in for the first time. Because of the big participation and the wide range of skills that the players have, it was decided that the players were divided into two groups; one group A and the other group B. Each player in each group with with another from the other group.

The combinations for this month matchday were:
Team 1 Matassim & Hj Halfiq
Team 2 Hj Mazrul & Fauzy
Team 3 Othman & Teo
Team 4 Jupry & Saiful
Team 5 Rosli T & Yahya
Team 6 Khairul & Sau Jin
Team 7 Suhaina & Zulhairul

Due to the number of pairings available, and in view of fitness and time, the organisers decided to shorten each game, where each game would be played in one set to 31-points. Winners would get one point and losers would get none.

The top three teams were hotly contested by Team 2, Team 3 and Team 5. At the end of the matchday, the result of the game between Team 2 and Team 3 were deciding the overall winner. Before their game started, Team 5 had 5 points from all six games, Team 2 had 5 points from five games and Team 3 had 4 points from five games. The situation was that if Team 3 had won, then Team 2, Team 3 and Team 5 would all have 5 points each. The organisers let out a collective sigh of relief when Team 2 finally won, giving the maximum six points from six games.

On the other end of the table, the team that would prop up the team had to be decided by the game between Team 4 and Team 7. Team 4 had no points yet from five games and Team 7 had a solitary point from five games. In the end, Team 4 beat Team 7, making them both the teams that came last in the league table.

Hj Mazrul still remained the only player not to lose any games and the only one to win consequtive Champion of the Month trophy, for four months in a row. The fact remained that whoever partnered Hj Mazrul had a very strong chance to become the Champion of the Month!

The result of April Matchday was:
First: Hj Mazrul & Fauzy – 6 points
Second: Rosli & Yahya – 5 points
Third: Othman & Teo – 4 points
Joint Forth: Khairul & Sau Jin and Matassim & Hj Halfiq – 2 points
Joint Sixth: Suhaina & Zulhairul and Jupry & Saiful – 1 point

The overall comments received from the players showed that the monthly tournament was a good avenue to gauge the level of badminton prowess and also a way to measure how much the players have improved. It was also hoped that similar number of players would join in the future. Hopefully, the tournament gets noticed by the Management and financial support would be given.

The League standing after April Matchday is:
Hj Mazrul - 4 games - 12 points
Rosli - 2 games - 5 points
Teo - 3 games - 4 points
Yahya - 3 games - 4 points
Suhaina - 4 games - 4 points
Hj Halfiq - 4 games - 4 points
Fauzy - 1 game - 3 points
Zulhairul - 2 games - 3 points
Othman - 4 games - 3 points
Rosli T - 1 game - 2 points
Khairul - 3 games - 2 points
Matassim - 4 games - 2 points

The next tournament remains unclear as the Main Purpose Hall of LLRC will be undergoing renovation works. Watch out for anouncement on this blog.

March Matchday

The third Matchday in the Mini BLNG Badminton League took place last week. Seven players from last month's matchday returned to play in March Matchday, with Yahya taking a break from the badminton league and Rosli had to miss this matchday due to work commitment. This month we welcomed Zulhairul, who is from the Lab, to take part in his first Monthly Matchday.

The combination for this month were:
1. Hj Halfiq and Khairul
2. Teo and Othman
3. Hj Mazrul and Zulhairul
4. Matassim and Suhaina

During the Matchday, Hj Mazrul/Zulhairul and Hj Halfiq/Khairul won their first two games, and these two doubles eventually met in the last game to determine the Champions of the Month. Teo/Othman and Matassim/Suhaina had to win their last game to determine who would prop up the league this month. Eventually, Hj Mazrul/Zulhairul won their last game against Hj Halfiq/Khairul, giving them the full three points. Hj Mazrul remains the only person to win all his games in the three monthly matchdays, though Zulhairul has not lost any games, but he had only played in one monthly matchday. Hj Mazrul also remains the only points to have scored maximum points. In the other game, Othman/Teo needed a third set to beat Matassim/Suhaina, giving them the solitary point. Suhaina turned from hero in the last matchday to zero this month as he and Matassim failed to score any point this month.

The result of the Matchday was:
Hj Mazrul and Zulhairul - 3 points
Hj Halfiq and Khairul - 2 points
Teo and Othman - 1 point
Matassim and Suhaina - 0 point

The League standing after March Matchday is:
Hj Mazrul, 3 games, 9 points
Rosli, 2 games, 5 points
Suhaina, 3 games, 4 points
Hj Halfiq, 3 games, 4 points
Zulhairul, 1 game, 3 points
Teo, 2 game, 3 points
Matassim, 3 games, 2 points
Yahya, 2 games, 2 points
Othman, 3 games, 2 points
